Welcome to Jacobsen Middle School! I am very excited to have your student in my class this year. Here is some overall information about the course, requirements, classroom rules, and procedures. After you have read the syllabus, please sign it and we will attach it to our Interactive Notebooks (INB) for future reference. Teachers, parents, and students work as a team to make the year successful. If you have any questions, please feel free to email or call me.
Advanced Math is intended for students who demonstrate a strong mathematical ability and a willingness to be challenged. This class will move at a quicker pace and follow the state’s guidelines in preparation for Algebra for the following year.

It is important to have the necessary supplies in class each day. Students should bring the following items to class each day:

§ Highlighter
§ Paper
§ Scissors
§ Glue
§ Calculator
Homework
§ Homework is 20% of the grade.
§ It will be assigned Monday thru Thursday and sometimes on Friday
§ Students will be given time in class to start on their homework. If they do not complete it in class they will be responsible for taking it home and finishing it.
§ Homework is always due on the following day and is worth 5 points:
5 points – attempted all problems and all work is shown
3 points – incomplete (half of problems attempted or no work shown)
0 points – no attempt
§ No late homework will be accepted for any reason (other than emergency, which will be cleared through JMS administration).
§ Students who are absent, and it has been excused, will have 2 days to make up the work.

§ Students are expected to complete each lesson in their notebook (unless otherwise noted).

§ INB are expected to be kept neat and are used for Math only.
Tests and Quizzes
§ Tests are 40% of the grade and quizzes are 10%.
§ The tests will require students to think critically and use problem solving skills. The tests will be collaborative or individual work.
§ Students who miss a test will be given a week to make it up.
§ Make up tests will be at given at lunch (I will make sure students know what day it is on)
Participation:
§ Participation will be 10%
§ Participation includes contributing to classroom discussions, activities, and performance tasks.
Classroom Procedures

§ Homework will be reviewed and collected.
§ Students will be working in their INB or workbook and will be taking notes during class.
§ After a lesson, students will be given independent practice and time to start on their homework.
Remind:
§ This provides a safe and easy way for me to text message students and parents and stay in touch (no phone numbers are used)
§ I use it to remind students of homework, tests, schedule changes, etc.
§ Please give this a try, you can always unsubscribe!
§ To receive text messages, send a text to the number 81010 with a message @missjegl
Classroom Expectations:
1. Be on-time, on-task, and prepared to learn everyday
2. Be responsible for your own learning
3. Respect the teacher, the classroom, other students
4. Trash goes in the trashcan
